The number of injuries the New Jersey Devils have sustained this season has been astounding.

During Saturday night’s tilt with the Vancouver Canucks, Devils veteran defenseman, Jonas Siegenthaler, broke his foot.

Usually when a player is injured during a game, head coach Lindy Ruff doesn’t provide an update right away. However, there was no hiding this one. The Devils knew the extent of the injury almost immediately after Siegenthaler left the ice, and it was not good.

“Jonas is not okay,” Ruff explained after the 6-4 loss to the Canucks. “Jones broke his foot with that shot. He’ll be out a while.”

The Swiss defenseman blocked two shots on 10 shifts Saturday night. The latter of the two shots broke his foot. However, Siegenthaler did not immediately come off the ice. Instead, he tried to play through the pain and defend the attacking Canucks. J.T. Miller wound up scoring on the play and Siegnethaler fell right to the ice. Unable to skate off the ice under his own power, Erik Haula and a team trainer helped Siegenthaler to the locker room.

For those keeping score at home, the Devils have now completely lost their top defensive pair of Siegenthaler and Dougie Hamilton (torn pectoral). Hamilton is unlikely to return until around the beginning of playoffs. There’s no timeline for Siegenthaler’s return at this point.

Add Siegenthaler to the long list of injured Devils at this point. On that list is fellow new admission Jack Hughes. Additionally, Timo Meier, Ondrej Palat, and Tomas Nosek.

The good news? Elliotte Friedman on Hockey Night in Canada explained Hughes won’t need surgery on the “arm-related” injury. We’ll see how long it takes the Devils All-Star to return.
