Doug Weight and Charlie Huddy will be the next two players added to the Edmonton Oilers Hall of Fame, the team announced on Wednesday morning.
Both players will be honoured when the Oilers host the New York Rangers on October 26 during a pre-game ceremony.
The Edmonton Oilers Hall of Fame was introduced in 2022 as a way for the team to honour players without having their jersey number retired, which is something they reserve for those who have been inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame. Each player’s name is permanently enshrined in the ring above the PCL Loge Level at Rogers Place.
The Oilers introduced their inaugural Hall of Fame class in November 2022 ahead of a game against the New Jersey Devils. Al Hamilton, Wayne Gretzky, Jari Kurri, Grant Fuhr, Paul Coffey, Mark Messier, Glenn Anderson, Kevin Lowe, Glen Sather, and Rod Phillips were automatically added by virtue of being enshrined in the Hockey Hall of Fame in the past, while Ryan Smyth and Lee Fogolin were the first two non-HHoF inductees.
Much like last year, the second round of Oilers Hall of Fame inductees will feature a defenceman from Edmonton’s dynasty years in the 1980s along with one of their star forwards from the 90s.
Doug Weight was selected by the Rangers in the second round of the 1990 draft and was traded to the Oilers in exchange for Esa Tikkanen in March of 1993. He spent parts of nine seasons with the Oilers and scored 157 goals and 577 points over 588 games.
Charlie Huddy was signed by the Oilers as an undrafted free agent and quickly developed into a key part of Edmonton’s blueline. He scored 368 points over 694 games with the Oilers across 11 seasons and was a member of all five of Edmonton’s Stanley Cup championships.
It’s fitting that the Oilers will host this year’s Hall of Fame ceremony before a game with New York. Glen Sather, who currently serves as a senior advisor and alternate governor for the Rangers, was the general manager in Edmonton who acquired both Weight and Huddy.
