The Edmonton Oilers have signed defenseman Cam Dineen to a one-year, two-way contract extension, the club announced Sunday afternoon.

Dineen, 24, has posted six goals and 47 points in 69 AHL games with the Tucson Roadrunners and Bakersfield Condors this season. His new contract carries an NHL cap hit of $775,000 for the 2023–24 season.

The Oilers acquired Dineen from the Arizona Coyotes ahead of last month’s trade deadline, as part of the deal which saw Nick Bjugstad head to Edmonton in exchange for Michael Kesselring and a 2023 third-round pick.

Dineen was slated to become a Group 6 unrestricted free agent this summer.

The Coyotes originally selected Dineen in the third round (No. 68 overall) of the 2016 NHL Draft. The five-foot-eleven defenseman, who shoots lefty, recorded seven assists in 34 NHL games with the Coyotes during the 2021–22 regular season.

After acquiring him from the Coyotes, the Oilers assigned Dineen to the Condors. In 19 games with Bakersfield since the trade, Dineen has collected two goals and 12 points.

With this latest news, the Oilers now have nine defensemen under contract for the 2023–24 season in Dineen, Darnell Nurse, Mattias Ekholm, Cody Ceci, Brett Kulak, Philip Broberg, Vincent Desharnais, Max Wanner and Markus Niemelainen.

The Condors placed fifth in the AHL’s Pacific Division with a 37–31–4 record and 78 points over 72 games this season. They are set to take on the Abbotsford Canucks in the first round of the 2023 Calder Cup Playoffs, with each game in the best-of-three series taking place at Abbotsford Centre.
