Toronto Maple Leafs goaltender Joseph Woll. John E. Sokolowski-USA TODAY Sports

There was a bit of drama during Tuesday’s game between the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Florida Panthers, as we had a goal review in the shootout when Evan Rodrigues appeared to touch the puck after it touched Joseph Woll’s pad during what was originally thought to be his shootout winning goal. The goal was called back, and then Noah Gregor went on to score the winner for the Leafs on the next attempt, much to the annoyance of Paul Maurice and the Panthers.

Tyler Yaremchuk and Frank Seravalli talked on "Daily Faceoff Live" about the shootout goal review and if it was the right call.

Tyler Yaremchuk: I will be honest, it took me between six and eight watches of this to be like “Oh, that’s why!” I think it was the right call, I think he very clearly tapped the puck twice, and you can’t do that. Do you think it was the right call?

Frank Seravalli: Well yeah, I think it was the right call. Once the puck touches the goalies pad, you can’t touch it again. The thing is it all seems to kind of happen in one motion. Like I don’t think Rodrigues purposefully went for a second whack at it, it’s just that his stick was there and the puck bounced off and then it ends up in the back of the net, certainly under Woll’s pad.

It was an amazing scene, because half of the arena had already left by the time they had reviewed it. Players had gone down the tunnel, they had to come back out.

And I love Paul Maurice. I’m going to call him an international treasure because he’s the best lip-reading coach in the league, and it’s not even really close. You see him on the bench, he says to the officials “Oh does that one count” meaning the next one that goes in and he’s like “bleep off”, and then he walks off the bench. Unreal, so good. And then after the game, he’s like “Ah you know, it’s good that we have rules”.
