Sean Monahan’s season is over.

Calgary Flames general manager Brad Treliving announced on Saturday that Monahan will undergo hip surgery and that he’ll be on the long-term injured reserve for the remainder of the season.

Monahan has played through a wealth of different injuries throughout his career, and this will be the second time the 27-year-old will undergo hip surgery. He had surgery on his “other hip” last spring following the 2021 season.

Injuries have clearly played a factor in the decline of Monahan’s game. Once a player who was perennially in the conversation to put up 30-goal seasons, Monahan scored just 18 goals and 51 points in 115 games over the past two seasons.

This year, Monahan’s role had been relegated to fourth-line center, and he was even made a healthy scratch for the first time in his NHL career in March.

Monahan has one more season left in the seven-year, $44.625 million contract he inked with the Flames following the completion of his entry-level deal back in 2016. Finding a way to move Monahan’s $6.375 million cap hit will be a priority for Treliving this offseason, as the Flames need to sort out new contracts for Johnny Gaudreau (UFA), Matthew Tkachuk (RFA) and Andrew Mangiapane (RFA).

The Flames boast the best record in the Pacific Division at 40-18-9.
