The Calgary Flames and general manager Brad Treliving have mutually agreed to part ways, the team announced on Monday.

Treliving was in the final year of his contract as a GM, and will seemingly be moving on from the organization by his own fruition. The Flames are coming off a disappointing season where they finished just outside of a playoff spot with a 38-27-17 record after winning the Pacific Division last season with a 50-21-11 record. However, Treliving did a miraculous job to salvage the 2022 offseason, replacing two stars who walked away or wanted out in Johnny Gaudreau and Matthew Tkachuk with Jonathan Huberdeau, Nazem Kadri and MacKenzie Weegar.

According to Daily Faceoff’s Frank Seravalli, it also seems like head coach Darryl Sutter will be sticking around for the time being. Considering the rising tensions between Sutter and the rest of the team, and Sutter’s close relationship with Flames ownership, it also explains why Treliving wanted to leave, as he likely saw this as a no-win situation for him.

Sutter also spent time as both the head coach and general manager of the Flames from 2003 to 2006, and then as solely the GM from 2006 to 2010, so it’s not out of the question that this scenario could go in that direction.

The Flames also promoted Don Maloney to President of Hockey Operations, and he will hold the position of interim general manager while they search for Treliving’s replacement. Maloney has been in the Flames organization since 2016, first serving as a scout in 2016-17 before he was promoted to Vice President of Hockey Operations in 2017 for a season, and then Senior Vice President of Hockey Operations in 2018, which he’s held until this promotion.

Eric Francis also reported on the Jeff Marek show that many more members of the organization could leave in the wake of Treliving’s departure. Not only will other members of management move on, but players and other staff members may consider it as well.
