The Calgary Flames have officially brought back defenseman Michael Stone on a one-year contract, the club announced Tuesday.

Stone’s new two-way deal carries a $750,000 NHL cap hit. He’ll become an unrestricted free agent when it expires next July.

This is the fifth contract Stone has signed with the Flames since being acquired from the Arizona Coyotes at the 2017 trade deadline. The 32-year-old defender scored two goals and six points in 11 games with the Flames during the 2021-22 regular season.

Stone elevated his game with Chris Tanev sidelined in the 2022 Stanley Cup Playoffs, appearing in nine of the club’s 12 games and scoring five points (two goals, three assists).

The Coyotes originally selected Stone in the third round (No. 69 overall) of the 2008 NHL Draft. He spent the first six seasons of his career in the desert before being traded to Calgary in 2017.

Stone has made Calgary his home and has remained with the organization ever since his arrival, even re-signing with the team shortly after being bought out in 2019. He’s appeared in 180 games with the Flames over parts of six seasons, scoring 11 goals and 38 points.

The Flames placed defenseman Nicolas Meloche on waivers Tuesday to make room for the Stone signing. With Meloche up for grabs and Oliver Kylington still on leave from the team, the Flames’ starting seven defenders are MacKenzie Weegar, Noah Hanifin, Rasmus Andersson, Chris Tanev, Nikita Zadorov, Connor Mackey, and Stone.
