The Calgary Flames have signed defenseman Oliver Kylington to a two-year contract extension, the club announced Tuesday.

Kylington’s new deal carries a $2.5 million annual cap hit, The 25-year-old defender set new career-high marks with nine goals, 22 assists, 31 points and 73 games played during the 2021-22 regular season.

Kylington was a restricted free agent who had filed for arbitration. He’ll become an unrestricted free agent when this new deal expires in 2024.

The Flames originally selected Kylington in the second round (No. 60 overall) of the 2015 NHL Draft. The 6-foot, 183-pound left-handed defenseman spent parts of the subsequent five seasons in the American Hockey League with the Stockton Heat.

Kylington received his first extended look with the Flames during the 2018-19 season and played an increased role with the team in 2019-20 before spending most of the 2020-21 season on the taxi squad. The Stockholm product cleared waivers and appeared in just eight games (all with the Flames) during the pandemic-shortened year.

Finally, Kylington emerged as a full-time NHLer with Calgary in 2021-22. He played the first 12 playoff games of his NHL career, scoring one goal and three assists.

In 168 career regular-season games with the Flames, Kylington has scored 14 goals and 47 points. He averaged 18:10 in his 73 games with the Flames in 2021-22, primarily playing on a pairing with Chris Tanev during the regular season.

The Flames now have 10 defenders signed to one-way contracts for the 2022–23 season: Noah Hanifin, Rasmus Andersson, Tanev, Nikita Zadorov, MacKenzie Weegar, Kylington, Juuso Valimaki, Nicolas Meloche, Connor Mackey and Dennis Gilbert.
