The Calgary Flames have signed forward Cody Eakin to a professional tryout, the club announced Sunday.
Eakin, 31, scored four goals and 12 points in 69 games with the Buffalo Sabres during the 2021–22 regular season.
The Washington Capitals originally selected Eakin in the third round (No. 85 overall) of the 2009 NHL Draft. He played 30 games with the Capitals in 2011–12 before being traded to the Dallas Stars the following summer.
Eakin spent the next five seasons with Dallas, reaching the 35-point plateau three times before bottoming out at three goals and 12 points in 60 games during the 2016–17 campaign. The Vegas Golden Knights selected Eakin from Dallas in the 2017 NHL Expansion Draft.
After two moderately productive seasons in Vegas, Eakin joined the Winnipeg Jets via trade midway through 2019–20 before signing a two-year deal with the Sabres as a first-time unrestricted free agent. The 6-foot, 183-pound center scored seven goals and 19 points in 115 games with Buffalo.
In 701 career NHL regular-season games with Washington, Dallas, Vegas, Winnipeg, and Buffalo, Eakin has scored 110 goals and 256 points. He’s amassed eight goals and 19 points in 50 playoff contests.
Eakin will attempt to crack a revamped Flames roster with plenty of veteran depth forwards already under contract. His main competition will likely be Trevor Lewis, Kevin Rooney, and Milan Lucic, while youngsters Jakob Pelletier and Adam Ruzicka should also vie for spots.
