Flyers acquire defenseman Tony DeAngelo in trade with Hurricanes

The Philadelphia Flyers acquire defenseman Tony DeAngelo from the Carolina Hurricanes for a trio of draft picks, the teams announced.

DeAngelo, 26, made his NHL debut with the Arizona Coyotes in 2016 and later played four seasons with the New York Rangers. During the 2019-20 season, DeAngelo finished 12th in voting for the James Norris Memorial Trophy, which recognizes the NHL's top defenseman.

Last season, he recorded 51 points with the Hurricanes and the team was plus-30 with DeAngelo on the ice.

Controversies have largely defined DeAngelo's career, though. In 2021, the Rangers cut ties with the defenseman after a series of incidents, including a physical altercation with goalkeeper Alexandar Georgiev.

DeAngelo has also received criticism for his activity on social media, including tweets that questioned the severity of the COVID-19 pandemic and assertions that the state of Pennsylvania was trying to "rig" the presidential election.
