The Philadelphia Flyers announced Wednesday morning that defenseman Adam Ginning was called up from the Lehigh Valley Phantoms (AHL).

In a corresponding move, defenseman Nick Seeler was placed on injured reserve. Seeler, 30, was injured in Monday’s Flyers game against the St. Louis Blues after taking a Colton Parayko shot off the left ankle late in the second period.

Seeler struggled to get back on his feet for several seconds after blocking the shot and was left crawling on the ice while play went on. The 30-year-old did manage to get back on two feet and hobble off the ice gingerly before returning for the start of the third period. Seeler played roughly half of the third period before leaving again; he was not made available to the media after the game.

Ginning, 24, has a chance to play in his second career NHL game with the Flyers. The 6-foot-4 blueliner made his NHL debut last season but spent most of his season in the AHL, appearing in 68 games with Lehigh Valley. Ginning spent the previous three seasons playing in the SHL in Sweden before coming over to North America last year.

The big Swede has appeared in 52 games with the Phantoms so far this season, scoring two goals and 11 assists to go along with 68 penalty minutes.

Although Emil Andrae had played four games with the Flyers at the start of this season, it appears the Flyers are going with Ginning as the Phantoms defenseman closest in style and stature to Seeler. The same is likely true with Ronnie Attard and Jamie Drysdale, instead of it having something to do with Sean Walker and his future with the Flyers.
