Philadelphia Flyers right wing Cam Atkinson Eric Hartline-USA TODAY Sports

Philadelphia Flyers winger Cam Atkinson will miss the rest of the season after he undergoes a non-orthopedic medical procedure, according to multiple sources with the team.

There hasn’t been an official announcement yet as to the injury or the severity of it, but Elliotte Friedman provided a bit more detail on the situation, clarifying that it is a neck/upper arm issue.

Atkinson has yet to play a game this season due to whatever is ailing him, although the path to get to this point has been a unique one. He’s been considered day-to-day and week-to-week for the majority of the season so far and was even practicing and looking close to returning before he was placed on injured reserve on Friday.

It isn’t exactly how Atkinson looked to continue his Flyers’ career, as he will now have not played a game the entire season for the team. He was looking to build off a solid first season with the team, where he had 23 goals, 27 assists, and 50 points in 73 games.

Atkinson is currently in the fifth year of a seven-year contract with a $5.875 million cap hit, a deal he originally signed with the Columbus Blue Jackets. Once a sixth-round draft pick for Columbus in 2008, he was dealt to the Flyers in the 2021 offseason in a one-for-one trade for winger Jakub Voracek. Ironically, Voracek’s career is also up in the air after he was shut down for the rest of this season.

You can add Atkinson to the growing pile of long-term injuries for the Flyers, as they also have Sean Couturier and Ryan Ellis’ statuses up in the air with their injuries, and Tanner Laczynski is also currently on injured reserve. However, Wade Allison, who is also on injured reserve, is slated to return to the lineup soon.
