Flyers' Claude Giroux on trade deadline: 'A lot of time left'

Club legend and captain Claude Giroux and the Philadelphia Flyers are seemingly going in different directions as of the All-Star break. Philadelphia sits seventh in the Metropolitan Division standings on win percentage, while Giroux turned 34 years old last month and is in the last season of his contract that includes a no-movement clause.

Flyers general manager Chuck Fletcher said in January that Giroux will have the final say on his future as it pertains to the trade deadline set for March 21, but Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman reported the veteran who has only played for Philadelphia during his lengthy NHL career will sit down with agent Pat Brisson to discuss a potential deal during the current break. Per TSN's Chris Johnston, Giroux provided little insight when speaking with reporters about the matter on Friday:

Giroux could offer plenty to a contender both on the ice and behind the scenes. As noted by ESPN stats, he leads the Flyers with 20 assists on the season and is second with 35 points. Nobody could blame him for going "ring chasing" at this stage of his career, and it's possible he could fetch his current employer assets in a trade and then re-sign with the Flyers this summer.

The Score's John Matisz has linked Giroux with the Calgary Flames, Minnesota Wild, Boston Bruins, and Colorado Avalanche, and Friedman added he believes "there are Avalanche players who’d love to have" Giroux as even a temporary teammate.
