Team USA shockingly lost in the World Championship semifinals, 4-3, to Germany on Saturday at Tampere, Finland.

Shockingly because the Germans tied the score with 1:23 to play — on a goal from a Flyers’ draft pick. Then, Germany struck again in overtime. Team USA took a 2–0 first-period lead but it wasn’t enough.

Germany’s Frederik Tiffels beat American goalie Casey DeSmith at 7:32 of the three-on-three overtime session. It was the Germans’ first lead in the game. The victory put Germany into the gold-medal game for the first time.

Tiffels was a Penguins’ sixth-round draft pick in 2015. He played collegiately at Western Michigan.

Flyers’ 2011 fourth-round draft pick Marcel Noebels scored the tying goal off a rebound. Noebels never played with the Flyers but played two seasons with the Adirondack Phantoms in 2012-13. He also played 31 games with the ECHL Trenton Titans in 2012-13.

Flyers prospect Cutter Gauthier was held off the scoreboard. In overtime, Gauthier had a handful of shots. Gauthier has seven goals and two assists in the tournament.

Team USA defeated Germany, 3-2, in the preliminary round.

Germany will play Canada, 4-2 winners over Latvia in the other semifinal Saturday. Flyers forward Scott Laughton had a goal and an assist in the Canadians’ victory.

The gold-medal game will be played Sunday at 1 p.m. (Philadelphia time). The bronze-medal game between Latvia and Team USA will be played Sunday at 8 a.m. (Philadelphia time). Both games will be on NHL Network.
