Flyers extend Oskar Lindblom after he completes cancer treatment, could make playoff roster
Just weeks after Philadelphia Flyers forward Oskar Lindblom completed his final treatment for a rare bone cancer amid the coronavirus pandemic, the club signed the 23-year-old to a three-year extension.
Per an official team statement, the deal is worth $9 million over those three seasons.
Lindblom reacted to the news while speaking with the club's website.
"I am very excited to be a part of the Flyers for the next three seasons. The support that the organization, the fans, and the entire NHL has given me has been quite overwhelming. I can't wait to get back skating with the boys and being the professional hockey player I know I can be. I want to thank the Flyers for giving me this opportunity and I look forward to the day I'm back and contributing to the team's success."
ESPN's Emily Kaplan reported in June that Lindblom wouldn't rejoin the Flyers for the 24-team model to crown a 2019-20 Stanley Cup champion that begins Aug. 1. However, general manager Chuck Fletcher suggested Lindblom could be available in the Toronto hub site.
As Sam Carchidi of The Philadelphia Inquirer wrote, Lindblom, who was first diagnosed last December, received clearance from his oncologist and the Flyers’ medical team to practice in Toronto, even though he is high-risk for COVID-19.
Lindblom tallied 11 goals and seven assists across 30 appearances this season before his diagnosis sidelined him through the start of summer.
