The Philadelphia Flyers are 2-0-1 in their last three games, and come-from-behind efforts have been a central theme in those three games. The Flyers have had to stick with it all season, and they were rewarded with their first two comeback wins of the year in consecutive games.
If one player has embodied the team so far, it’s Tyson Foerster.
The 21-year-old hadn’t scored in his first 15 games of the 2023-24 season, and didn’t find his second tally until Game 22. Then he scored again. And again.
Matching up with future Hockey Hall of Famers like Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin in back-to-back games is no easy feat. In the grand scheme of things, those two were non-factors as Foerster and the Flyers defeated them twice in three nights.
“We just worry about ourselves,” head coach John Tortorella said.
“We don’t have, maybe that huge superstar or game-changer or whatever,” Sean Couturier added. “We have depth and guys that play the right way and stick together.”
Foerster has been one of those guys for the Philadelphia Flyers all year. Even though he’s just now showing the goal-scoring prowess that made him a first-round pick, it’s been all the other things that have impressed his peers.
“The way he plays, he plays the right way he’s mature in the way he plays, he battles hard,” Couturier explained. “[Foerster] does a lot of little things that people maybe don’t notice, even if he’s not producing. Obviously he wants to score goals – those kinds of scorers, you know, once they get one it unblocks everything else, and you can see the confidence he’s had in the last week or two. It’s nice to see him grow because he’s a big part of our team.”
Couturier’s analysis of a goal opening things up for his Flyers teammate is spot-on. Foerster has now scored in three straight, and has points in each of his last four. Tortorella, for that matter, isn’t the least bit surprised.
“To me, [the detailed play] kind of fast-forwards him as far as what it is to be a pro, and the things you have to do as a National Hockey Leaguer,” Tortorella elaborated. “It’s great seeing him score the goals, but it’s been so impressive as far as the other stuff. That’s caught us off guard, as a coaching staff.”
“We didn’t realize how equipped he was,” Tortorella concluded. “He’s been our most consistent guy at it – on the team.”
And now, the Philadelphia Flyers might be equipped for further long-term success knowing how advanced a 21-year-old Tyson Foerster already is.
