As part of their ongoing front office revamp, the Ottawa Senators announced three changes on Sunday afternoon. One of them was that Philadelphia Flyers legend, Dave Poulin, would be joining the Senators as Senior Vice President of Hockey Operations.

Poulin, 65, played eight NHL seasons with the Philadelphia Flyers, scoring 161 goals, 233 assists, and 394 points in 467 games played. Poulin won the Frank J. Selke Trophy in the 1986-87 season, and was a perennial Selke nominee for the majority of his playing days. The Flyers’ buzz saw made stops with the Boston Bruins and Washington Capitals before his retirement following the 1994-95 season. Perhaps most notably, Poulin took over for Bobby Clarke as the Flyers‘ captain, and served in this role for six seasons.

Following the conclusion of his playing career, Poulin spent a decade coaching Notre Dame’s hockey team, and also served as the Toronto Maple Leafs’ Vice President of Hockey Operations, and then as General Manager of the Toronto Marlies. After leaving his post in 2014, the Ontario native served as a TV and radio analyst for TSN. Poulin was also inducted into the Flyers Hall of Fame on Feb. 23, 2004.

In his new role with the Ottawa Senators, Poulin will be joined by Steve Staios, who will serve as the Senators’ General Manager and President of Hockey Operations, and Ryan Bowness, who will be the Senators’ Associate General Manager. It’s likely Poulin’s previous experience in a prominent front office role, as well as with coaching, were factors in his hiring.

The Senators already dismissed former head coach D.J Smith on Dec. 18, and have a record of 13-18-0 this season. They’re currently 29th in the league with 26 points, sit at the basement of the Eastern Conference, and are 14 points away from a wild card playoff spot.
