Following the end of the Philadelphia Flyers’ regular season, Travis Sanheim went straight back onto the ice, joining Team Canada for the 2022 IIHF World Championships in Finland. Canada entered as the defending world champions and Sanheim was ready to help them protect their crown. Sanheim was the only Flyers player to represent Canada at the 2022 IIHF World Championships.

Sanheim had a breakout year with the Flyers in 2021-2022. He earned the Flyers’ Barry Ashbee Trophy and Pelle Lindbergh Memorial Trophy. Sanheim led the Flyers in plus/minus with a +7 and he was tied with Ivan Provorov for most points on the blue line with thirty-one. He was one of the only Flyers players to take a positive step forward this year and he proved that he’s an important defenseman to Philadelphia.

Continuing Strong Play

During his ten games played with Canada, Sanheim registered four points (1G, 3A) and was a +7. His +7 ranked him tenth overall out of all players in the tournament. Sanheim didn’t take any penalties during those ten games and he had sixteen shots on goal.

Finland Wins Gold

Finland defeated Canada in overtime to win the 2022 IIHF World Championship. Sakari Manninen gave Finland their fourth-ever IIHF championship. Canada earned silver.

Despite Canada’s loss, Sanheim was a pivotal part of their blue line all tournament long and he continued on where he left off after his season in Philadelphia. Sanheim will now have his sights focused on continuing to be a key defenseman for the Flyers in 2022-2023.
