Pittsburgh Penguins center Ryan Poehling Charles LeClaire-USA TODAY Sports

The Philadelphia Flyers announced that they have signed free agent Ryan Poehling to a one-year contract. According to CapFriendly, the contract will have an average annual value (AAV) of $1.4 million.

Poehling spent the 2022-23 season with the Pittsburgh Penguins; he notched seven goals and seven assists for 14 points in 53 games.

The Lakeville, Minnesota product was initially drafted No. 25 overall in the 2017 NHL Draft by the Montreal Canadiens. He spent three seasons at St. Cloud State University in the NCAA and recorded back-to-back 30-plus point seasons in 2017-18 and 2018-19. St. Cloud won the NCHC Championship in 2019-19; as a result, Poehling was named to the NCAA (NCHC) First All-Star Team. That same season, Poehling represented the USA at the IIHF World Junior Hockey Championships, where he notched five goals and eight points in seven games, capturing a silver medal and was named the IIHF Player of the Tournament.

Poehling made his NHL debut in 2018-19 with the Canadiens, scoring a hat-trick in his first NHL game. At aged 20, he became the first Canadiens player to score three goals in his first NHL game since Alex Smart had three goals and an assist on Jan. 14, 1943. After three seasons with the Canadiens that saw plenty of action in the AHL with the Laval Rocket, Poehling decided to cut ties and head to free agency. He signed a one-year deal with the Penguins.

Throughout his NHL career thus far, Poehling has appeared in 138 games and has collected 20 goals and 16 assists for 36 points.
