The Philadelphia Flyers, despite their best efforts, were on the losing side of a goalie battle with the St. Louis Blues on Monday night, despite Scott Laughton’s goal and Sam Ersson’s 24 saves.
This game was mostly a snooze-fest, as both teams checked the middle of the ice very tightly. Halfway through the first period, the teams had only combined for four shots on goal in what was, admittedly, not the Flyers’ best effort.
Flyers’ Offense still inconsistent
Laughton did buy the Flyers a cheap goal late in the first period, crashing the net with just over a minute left in the first period to jam home a rebound from a Ryan Poehling shot, giving him 10 goals on the season.
Tyson Foerster continued to be active at and around the net on Monday, getting off some high-quality shots and helping set up good looks, too. As the score suggests, Foerster’s up-and-down finishing haunted him despite his team-high six shots on goal, as it did with the rest of the Flyers players.
Cam York and Travis Sanheim both had strong looks to potentially end the game in overtime, but York’s shot hit the crossbar and Jordan Binnington made a strong save on Sanheim.
Nick Seeler injured in Flyers loss
Seeler got injured late in the second period, hobbling off to the bench and then down the tunnel after taking a Colton Parayko shot off his left ankle.
Seeler did return for the third period, but did not get back on the ice for the latter half of the period. The rugged shot-blocking defenseman was not made available for comment postgame.
The Flyers will have a day off on Tuesday, so it’s unclear if or when an update on his status will be provided.
Finishing could stand improve
Overtime was forced via a Kevin Hayes breakaway goal, and it could have gone better for the Flyers. York and Sanheim both had chances to finish the game off, and otherwise, the Flyers didn’t have the lion’s share of possession.
Foerster, Sean Couturier, Morgan Frost, and Owen Tippett went in the shootout, but only Frost was able to score for the Flyers. Jake Neighbours and Pavel Buchnevich scored for the Blues to lift the visitors to a win in the extra phase.
This loss was what could be Seeler and Sean Walker’s last home game as Flyers players.
