A trade took place in the NHL this afternoon, as the Arizona Coyotes are sending defenseman Dysin Mayo to the Vegas Golden Knights in exchange for a 2023 fifth-round pick as well as the remainder of Shea Weber’s contract.

As per Chris Johnston, this move frees up the Golden Knights to make a subsequent trade and acquire a player with term, as having Weber with a cap hit of $7.85 million for the next three seasons on long-term injured reserve was limiting their roster flexibility. The Golden Knights acquired the 37-year-old this offseason in a deal for Evgenii Dadonov while knowing he would never play again due to a multitude of injuries.

While moving on from Weber’s contract, the Golden Knights were also able to bring in Dysin Mayo to add depth to their back end. The 26-year-old has played 15 games with the Coyotes this season, but has yet to register a point. He has spent a larger chunk of the 2022-23 campaign in the American Hockey League, where in 26 games with the Tucson Roadrunners he has two goals and seven points. He is in the first year of a three-year contract which carries a cap hit of $950,000.
