Vegas Golden Knights goaltender Logan Thompson Brett Holmes-USA TODAY Sports

In a press availability on Friday ahead of the weekend’s Stanley Cup parade, Vegas Golden Knights GM Kelly McCrimmon said that goaltenders Logan Thompson and Laurent Brossoit should be ready to return to action for the 2023-24 NHL season.

McCrimmon said both goaltenders weren’t far off of returning to the lineup, if needed, during the Stanley Cup playoffs. He specifically said that Thompson is expected to return in time for training camp. Brossoit is a pending unrestricted free agent but could still return back to Vegas.

Thompson last played on March 23, a 37-save victory over Calgary. A leg injury in February kept him out of action before tweaking it again in that game against the Flames. Prior to his injury, Thompson was one of the top picks for the Calder Trophy as the league’s top rookie, posting a 21-13-3 record with two shutouts and a .915 save percentage. The 26-year-old was Vegas’ starting goaltender at the time, so it appeared his absence would be a significant loss. Vegas went on to win the Stanley Cup with Adin Hill in net.

Brossoit, 30, had a 7-0-3 record in 11 games with the Golden Knights, assuming the playoff starting job after finishing off the regular season. He suffered a lower-body injury in Game 3 of the second round against Edmonton and was replaced by Hill the rest of the way. Brossoit is a pending free agent but has proven to be a solid backup option throughout his career in Edmonton, Winnipeg and Vegas.

Vegas will have an interesting offseason in the crease, to say the least. Brossoit, Hill and veteran Jonathan Quick are all set to become UFAs, while prospect Jiri Patera will be a restricted free agent. Thompson has two more years on his deal at $766,667, an incredible value for a starting goalie. With $3.462 million in projected cap space, the Golden Knights will need to get creative while potentially finding room for Ivan Barbashev.

According to Ryan Wallis, host of the Vegas Golden Knights Insiders Show, McCrimmon has talked to Robin Lehner, who missed the entire 2022-23 season due to injury. McCrimmon said it’s too early to know what Lehner’s future looks like after having major hip surgery last summer.
