The Carolina Hurricanes will have to make do without star forward Andrei Svechnikov for Sunday’s game against the Minnesota Wild as he deals with an upper-body injury, the Hurricanes announced Sunday afternoon.
Svechnikov, 23, has 11 goals and 30 points in 29 games with the Hurricanes to this point in the 2023–24 regular season. The Barnaul, Russia product has already missed a significant chunk of games in October and December of this season with various other injuries.
The Hurricanes are slated to take on the Wild at PNC Arena in Raleigh, NC at 5:00 p.m. ET. Carolina has been one of the National Hockey League’s hottest teams of late, moving within three points of the New York Rangers for first place in the Metropolitan Division after posting an 8–1–1 record in their last 10 games.
The Hurricanes originally selected Svechnikov from the OHL’s Barrie Colts with the No. 2 overall pick in the 2018 NHL Draft. The 6’2″ winger made his NHL debut with the Hurricanes in the 2018–19 season, posting 37 points in 82 games and adding five points in nine Stanley Cup Playoff contests.
Svechnikov has played a major role in the Hurricanes transitioning out of their decade-long playoff drought and becoming a perennial contender. Through 376 career games in Carolina over the last six seasons, Svechnikov has collected 123 goals and 294 points.
Unfortunately, Svechnikov has also dealt with numerous injuries to this point in his NHL career. He did not play for the Hurricanes in the 2023 Stanley Cup Playoffs while recovering from knee surgery, leaving his career playoff point total at 25 in 40 games.
It remains to be seen whether Svechnikov will be in the lineup when the Hurricanes take on the Boston Bruins at TD Garden on January 24. Svechnikov scored a goal and an assist while logging 16:40 of ice time in Carolina’s 4–2 win over the Detroit Red Wings on Friday.
