Carolina Hurricanes forward Teuvo Teravainen suffered a broken hand in the third period of Wednesday’s playoff game against the New York Islanders and will undergo surgery, according to Hurricanes head coach Rod Brind’Amour.

Teravainen suffered the injury as a result of an unpenalized slash by New York Islanders forward Jean-Gabriel Pageau during a Hurricanes power play late in the third period of Game 2. The Hurricanes ultimately won the game 4–3 in overtime to take a 2–0 series lead.

Brind’Amour said Teravainen will undergo hand surgery on Thursday and will miss the rest of the Hurricanes’ Eastern Conference quarterfinal playoff series against the Islanders while recovering.

Teravainen logged 14:41 of ice time and took two shots on goal in Game 2 before leaving the Hurricanes’ bench late in the third period. Jesper Fast scored at the 5:03 mark of overtime to win the game for Carolina.

The Hurricanes entered the series without the services of top wingers Andrei Svechnikov and Max Pacioretty, both of whom are on injured reserve with season-ending lower-body injuries.

Teravainen, 28, won the Stanley Cup with the Chicago Blackhawks in 2015 before being traded to the Hurricanes in a cap-clearing move the following year. The Finnish winger quickly emerged as one of Carolina’s top scorers, although he regressed somewhat in the 2022–23 regular season, posting just 12 goals and 37 points in 68 games.

Through 594 career games over parts of 10 NHL regular seasons with Chicago and Carolina, Teravainen has collected 130 goals and 406 points. He has added 20 goals and 43 points in 75 career playoff contests.

After winning both Games 1 and 2 at PNC Arena in Raleigh, the Hurricanes will now hit the road for a pair of games at UBS Arena in Elmont, N.Y.. The two teams will return to action on Friday for Game 3 at 7:00 p.m. ET.
