The Carolina Hurricanes have signed defenseman Calvin de Haan to a one-year contract, the club announced Saturday.
De Haan’s new one-way contract with Carolina carries an $850,000 National Hockey League cap hit. The 31-year-old defender had been attending Hurricanes training camp on a professional tryout.
The 6-foot-1 left-handed defender from Carp, Ontario, previously spent the 2018-19 season with the Hurricanes before being traded to the Chicago Blackhawks, with whom he played from 2019 to 2022.
De Haan scored one goal and 14 points while averaging 18:31 in 74 games with Carolina in 2018-19. In the three seasons since, he’s amassed 24 points (six goals, 18 assists) and averaged 19:03 in 142 games.
Now signed through the end of the 2022-23 season, de Haan will look to carve out a role as a member of a Carolina defensive corps that also includes Jaccob Slavin, Brent Burns, Brady Skjei, Brett Pesce, Ethan Bear, Dylan Coghlan and Jalen Chatfield.
Most recently, de Haan logged 18:57 on average and scored eight points (four goals, four assists) in 69 games with the Blackhawks in 2021-22. He now returns to the team he signed with as an unrestricted free agent after wrapping up a six-year tenure with the New York Islanders to begin his NHL career.
