As NHL insider Chris Johnston first reported, the New York Islanders have acquired forward Pierre Engvall from the Toronto Maple Leafs in exchange for a 2024 third-round pick.

The 26-year-old Swedish product was drafted by the Leafs in the seventh round of the 2014 NHL Draft. He made his NHL debut during the 2019-20 season, registering 15 points (eight goals, seven assists) in 48 games. Last season, Engvall resurged and recorded a career-best 35 points (15 goals, 20 assists) in 78 games. Engvall, according to our friends at CapFriendly earned himself a one-year, $2.25 million extension during the summer. He will become an unrestricted free agent when the season ends. This season, he has notched 12 goals and 21 points in 58 games. In 226 career regular-season games with the Leafs, he has registered 83 points.

The Islanders now make their first move since acquiring Bo Horvat from the Vancouver Canucks in exchange for Aatu Raty, Anthony Beauvillier and a conditional 2023 first-round pick. The Islanders sit first in the Wild Card race for the intense Metropolitan Division. They pose a record of 31-25-7 and a points percentage of .548%. They are in Minnesota on Tuesday taking on the Wild. Engvall could make his debut as early as Saturday against the Detroit Red Wings.

Kyle Dubas and the Leafs acquire a 2024 third-round pick. The Leafs continue to remain extremely busy ahead of the trade deadline; trading for Sam Lafferty and Jake McCabe from the Chicago Blackhawks on Monday and acquiring the services of Luke Schenn from the Canucks and Erik Gustafsson from the Washington Capitals today.
