The Los Angeles Kings have re-signed defenseman Alex Edler to a one-year contract, the club announced Tuesday afternoon.
Edler’s new deal carries a base salary of $750,000. Additionally, the 36-year-old Swede will be able to collect up to $750,000 in signing bonuses if he reaches certain games-played thresholds in 2022–23.
A mainstay with the Vancouver Canucks for 15 seasons, Edler joined the Kings on a one-year contract last July. He appeared in 41 games with the Kings in 2021–21, missing exactly half the regular season while dealing with injuries.
During the regular season, Edler racked up three goals (including the 100th of his career) and 19 points while averaging 18:28 per game. He also appeared in each of the Kings’ seven playoff games, recording two assists as L.A. fell to the Edmonton Oilers in the first round.
The Kings now have eight defensemen with National Hockey League experience signed for the 2022–23 season: Drew Doughty, Matt Roy, Sean Walker, Tobias Bjornfot, Jordan Spence, Jacob Moverare, Frederic Allard and Edler. Additionally, 2021–22 Kings mainstays Sean Durzi and Mikey Anderson are pending RFAs.
While with the Canucks, Edler exceeded 30 points in a season eight times. He scored eight goals and 33 points in just 51 games with the Canucks in 2010–11 before appearing in all 25 games in the team’s run to the 2011 Stanley Cup Final.
Edler has appeared in 966 regular-season games with the Canucks and Kings during his career, totaling 102 goals and 428 points. He, along with all NHL players older than 35, is eligible to sign a contract with bonuses because of his age.
