Leon Draisaitl is officially the power play king of the Edmonton Oilers.
Draisaitl scored on the man advantage in the first period against the Nashville Predators on Tuesday to pass Glenn Anderson and Ryan Smyth for the most power play goals in franchise history with 127.
The goal coming against Nashville is fitting considering Draisaitl has completely dominated them over the past few seasons. He has 23 goals across 24 games against the Preds for his career all told and the one in the first period on Tuesday made it 21 goals in his last 12 games against Nashville.
Anderson scored 126 power play goals over 845 games with the Oilers in the 1980s and Smyth scored 126 goals in 971 games across two different stints with the team. Draisaitl passed the two Oilers legends while playing in the 641st game of his career.
The power play has been a huge part of Edmonton’s success over the past few seasons. During the 2022-23 season, the Oilers posted the best power play percentage in a single season in league history at 32.4 percent. Draisaitl accounted for a league-leading 32 goals out of the 89 goals that Edmonton scored with the man advantage.
The NHL’s all-time record holder for power play goals is Alexander Ovechkin, who has 299 and counting. Draisaitl just pulled into the top 100 and is now tied at 127 with Vincent Lecavalier, Denis Savard, and Denis Potvin. This game against Nashville isn’t over at the time of publishing and Draisaitl could very well have passed the likes of Shane Doan and Vincent Damphousse by the time you’re reading it.
