The Los Angeles Kings have signed defenseman Jacob Moverare to a two-year contract extension worth $775,000.

Moverare was placed on waivers earlier in the day by the Kings, so if a team picks him up on waivers, they’ll get the 25-year-old with an extra two years on his deal.

Moverare was drafted 112th overall by the Kings in 2016. The Swedish-born defender has played 10 games with the Kings this season but has failed to register a point. He has 31 games of NHL experience over three years, registering two assists and 28 penalty minutes. Moverare also has 10 goals and 69 points in 152 AHL games with the Ontario Reign.

Moverare came over to North America in 2016, becoming a key member of the Mississauga Steelheads for two years. During that time, he helped Sweden win silver at the 2018 World Juniors, losing to Canada. The following year, Moverare helped Frolunda win both the SHL championship and the Champions Hockey League title, spending two years before joining the LA Kings organization. He started the 2020-21 season with SaiPa in the Finnish Liiga before the AHL opened up play during the second half of the season.

The left-handed blueliner is big at 6-foot-3 and 209 pounds. He’s a competitive defender with good hockey sense, but can be caught out by quicker skaters. Still, at an inexpensive deal wand with some NHL experience, a team looking to add some depth could do worse than picking him up on waivers.

If the Kings keep him, he’ll be one of 10 defensemen under contract for next year. Matt Roy is set to become a UFA, while Jordan Spence will be an RFA, but if both re-sign, they should come at a cap-friendly cost.

The Kings also signed goaltender Jacob Ingham to a one-year, two-year contract worth $775,000 earlier in the day, assigning him to the ECHL’s Greenville Swamp Rabbits.
