Rankings

Lucas Beckman may not be of typical goalie size, standing at only 6-foot-2, but he has not let that get in the way of being one of the best in between the pipes in the Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League (QMJHL). After playing in nine games last season for the Baie-Comeau Drakkar, he took over the reins fully this season and looked solid.

Finding holes in Beckman’s game is hard, as he is a really sound, all-around netminder. The biggest downfall to the QMJHL regular-season wins leader is his size. Being on the smaller side could see him fall in the draft somewhat. But with that being said, being as sound as he is in the crease starts with being very calm and poised under pressure. Fighting through traffic to get eyes on shots from farther out has helped Beckman immensely this season, showing a strong capability of tracking the puck movement.

Beckman gets in trouble periodically because of his overactive stick play, which leads to an open five hole. Tied in with this is his tendency to get a little wild moving around the crease and find himself out of position. He has been able to work on being a more controlled goaltender throughout the season and has proved that his size may not be as big of an issue as many believe it is.

Being invited by Hockey Canada to be a part of the Under-18 World Championship roster, Beckman can garner the attention of NHL organizations with a strong showing in the tournament. With his athleticism, high competitive level, and skill set, he could be a goaltender an NHL club would love to have in their system.

Beckman’s upside and skillset put him in the next tier of goaltender prospects in this year’s draft behind Joshua Ravensbergen and Jack Ivankovic. Likely, he will not hear his name called until the end of the fourth round.

Quotables

“Beckman’s game consists of controlled movement that helps showcase his innate ability to stay square to shooters. By positioning himself centered to the puck, Beckman doesn’t give much space for shooters to look at. Beckman also showed incredible reaction ability.”- David Phillips, Future Considerations

“He was tracking pucks so well, especially up high. I like his athleticism and how he challenges shooters on the rush.”- Steven Ellis, Daily Faceoff on Beckman’s play at the 2024 Hlinka Gretzky Cup
