One of the top unsigned free agents to kick off the season has finally found a home.

As first reported by Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman, forward Sonny Milano is joining the Washington Capitals on a one-year contract.

Chris Johnston reported the deal is for $750,000.

The deal will be one-way, meaning Milano will need to clear waivers and will start with the AHL’s Hershey Bears.

Milano, 26, had 14 goals and 34 points with the Anaheim Ducks last season, his best in the NHL. Milano has 197 games placed since 2015-16, registering 36 goals and 81 points in that span.

Milano signed a PTO to join the Calgary Flames this year but failed to record a point in four preseason outings and was released.

A first-round pick in 2014, Milano is a flashy forward that can dazzle you with quick moves and creative plays. He is perhaps most famous for batting in the over-the-net pass from Trevor Zegras last season, creating one of the most memorable goals in recent hockey memory. Staying consistent has been a challenge for Milano, who has bounced between the NHL and AHL throughout his career.

It’ll be interesting to see how the 26-year-old fits into Washington’s plans. Milano could be a depth scoring option for the Caps that can step up if the club has injuries, but he’s more valuable in a scoring role than a checking one.

Of course, going on waivers means someone could snatch him up, so who knows? The next few days will be interesting to see how/where he’s utilized.
