Maple Leafs' Auston Matthews wins 2022 Hart Memorial Trophy

Toronto Maple Leafs center Auston Matthews won the 2022 Hart Memorial Trophy, which recognizes the NHL's most valuable player.

Matthews, 24, finished the 2021-22 season with 60 goals, the most for any NHL player in a single season in a decade. He received 119 first-place votes on the 195 ballots to win the Hart Trophy. The Edmonton Oilers' Connor McDavid — who won the award last season — finished second with 29 first-place votes and New York Rangers goaltender Igor Shesterkin finished third with 24 first-place votes.

Matthews is the first Maple Leafs player to win the award since Ted Kennedy in 1955.

As the NHL's leading goal scorer, Matthews received the Maurice "Rocket" Richard Trophy for the second straight year. Matthews also received the Ted Lindsay Award, voted on by the NHLPA and recognizing the NHL's most outstanding player.

Matthews finished second in the Hart Trophy voting last season behind McDavid, who won the award unanimously.
