Is Toronto Maple Leafs goaltender Frederik Andersen on the trade block? Nick Turchiaro-USA TODAY Sports

Maple Leafs looking to trade Frederik Andersen, Andreas Johnsson?

The Toronto Maple Leafs appear to be very active on the trade market. It started with Kasperi Kapanen being sent to the Pittsburgh Penguins on Tuesday.

According to The Athletic's James Mirtle, Maple Leafs general manager Kyle Dubas is exploring the trade market for starting goaltender Frederik Andersen. Dubas also is said to be dangling the likes of Andreas Johnsson, Pierre Engvall and Alex Kerfoot in trade discussions.

Andersen has one year remaining on his current deal with the Maple Leafs, which carries a $5 million cap hit. He's been with Toronto the past four years, and trading him will clear up some much-needed salary cap space for the club.

In his career with Toronto, he's amassed a 136-66-33 record with a .916 save percentage and 2.77 goals-against average with 13 shutouts.

Johnsson holds a cap hit of $3.4 million over the next three seasons. The 25-year-old has proved to be a valuable top-nine winger after tallying 67 points in 125 games played in three seasons with Toronto.

Engvall signed a two-year, $2.5 million deal with the Maple Leafs in February, and Kerfoot is under contract with a $3.5 million cap hit through 2023.

Shedding contracts will allow the Maple Leafs to keep their big four of Auston Matthews, John Tavares, Mitch Marner and William Nylander with the club for the foreseeable future. However, Dubas needs to sign restricted free agents Travis Dermott and Ilya Mikheyev to new deals while also adding to his club's defense corps.

If they trade Andersen, the Leafs likely will rely on the likes of Kasimir Kaskisuo and possibly Jack Campbell in goal for the 2020-21 campaign unless they sign another goaltender.
