Maple Leafs netminder Jack Campbell out at least two weeks with rib injury

Toronto Maple Leafs goaltender Jack Campbell may be in need of some rest as winter turns to spring. That's exactly what Campbell will get but not for a reason anyone involved enjoys heading into the weekend.

Per Dave McCarthy of the NHL's website, Maple Leafs coach Sheldon Keefe confirmed Thursday that Campbell will miss at least two weeks of action with a rib injury. The news comes after the 30-year-old surrendered four goals on 30 shots in Tuesday's 6-4 win over the Seattle Kraken.

McCarthy notes that Campbell's form dipped over his past 15 games, during which the All-Star posted a 4.00 goals-against average, .872 save percentage and 7-4-2 record.

"We knew he had tweaked something a while ago, a week or so ago, and he aggravated it the other night in our game," Keefe said of Campbell. "We knew that he was uncomfortable after the game and that yesterday he wasn't feeling a lot better. We sent him for some tests and found out this morning he's going to need some time."

Keefe did add, however, that he does not believe the rib issue was the only reason for Campbell's struggles since Jan. 8.

Petr Mrazek moves up the depth chart and becomes Toronto's starter in Campbell's absence. Mrazek holds a 10-5-0 record with a 3.28 goals-against average and .890 save percentage in 15 games and 13 starts this season. Toronto recalled Erik Kallgren from the Toronto Marlies of the American Hockey League to serve in a backup role.

The 37-16-4 Maple Leafs began Thursday third in the Atlantic Division standings with 78 points, five points ahead of the fourth-place Boston Bruins. Toronto next hosts the Arizona Coyotes on Thursday evening.
