Maple Leafs reportedly working on extension for Wayne Simmonds
It appears Wayne Simmonds might be sticking around Toronto after all.
According to Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman, the Maple Leafs are working on an extension with Simmonds. Terms of the potential deal have not yet been revealed.
Simmonds signed with the Maple Leafs for the 2020-21 campaign after stints with the New Jersey Devils and Buffalo Sabres the season prior. He notched seven goals and two assists in 38 games.
Earlier this month, the 32-year-old said he "thoroughly enjoyed" his time with the Leafs but had "no clue" whether or not he'd be back with the team next season.
It's not hard to see why general manager Kyle Dubas wants to bring Simmonds back. He played on a $1.5 million contract last season and should come cheap again this year.
Toronto is in for a slew of changes this offseason after failing to reach the second round of the playoffs for the fifth consecutive year. The Maple Leafs have not won a playoff series since the 2003-04 campaign.
