The Toronto Maple Leafs have signed defenseman Conor Timmins to a two-year contract extension, the team announced on Thursday.

The 24-year-old has fit in well as a right-handed depth defenseman with the club since he was acquired in November.

The new deal has an average annual value of $1.1 million. He was set to become a restricted free agent at the end of this season. His salary this year is $850,000.

The Maple Leafs sent forward prospect Curtis Douglas to the Arizona Coyotes in return for the defensive prospect.

In 18 games with the Maple Leafs this season, Timmins has a goal and 11 assists.

Prior to joining the Maple Leafs, the St. Catherines, Ontario native had skated in 41 career NHL games split between Arizona and Colorado and registered seven assists.

Internationally, Timmins won a gold medal with Team Canada during the 2018 IIHF World Junior Championship.

Timmins was originally drafted by the Colorado Avalanche in the second round (32nd overall) of the 2017 NHL Draft.
