Maple Leafs sign defenseman Timothy Liljegren to two-year, $2.8M extension

Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman Timothy Liljegren committed a portion of his future to his current employer. 

Per the team's website and the Associated Press (h/t ESPN), Liljegren put pen to paper on a two-year contract extension that carries an average annual value of $1.4 million.

Liljegren appeared in 61 regular-season games for the 2021-22 NHL campaign. The 23-year-old tallied five goals and 18 assists over those contests, and he then logged a pair of playoff appearances before the Maple Leafs were eliminated from the tournament. Per ESPN stats, he notched zero points in those postseason matchups. 

Liljegren entered the NHL when Toronto selected him in the first round of the 2017 draft, but he didn't make his league debut until Jan. 18, 2020. In total, he's accumulated five goals and 19 assists in 74 regular-season games with the Maple Leafs. According to the team's release, Liljegren has 11 goals and 62 assists over 148 regular-season contests with the Toronto Marlies of the American Hockey League during his career.
