Following his illegal check to the head of New Jersey Devils defenseman Jonas Siegenthaler, New York Rangers forward Matt Rempe is going to face discipline.

The Department of Player Safety announced on Tuesday that Rempe will have a phone hearing. A phone hearing means that Rempe can receive a maximum sentence of a five-game suspension.

Toward the end of the second period on Monday night, Rempe caught Siegenthaler with an illegal check to the head, extending his elbow to make contact with the Devils defenseman. Rempe received a five-minute major and a game misconduct as a result.

Following the incident that took Siegenthaler out of the remainder of the tilt between the Devils and Rangers, New Jersey was quite forward with their belief that Rempe should certainly hear from George Parros and co.

“Oh, yeah, of course,” MacDermid said to New Jersey Hockey Now when asked if he’d like to see Rempe disciplined. “I mean, you know, he’s a huge guy and he’s just throwing his elbows around like that. You gotta learn how to hit properly and not injure players. You never want to see a guy go down like that.”

Devils forward Jesper Bratt explained Siegenthaler is the Devils’ second victim of Rempe’s recklessness and should face discipline.

“I think so,” Bratt stated. “I mean, it’s another guy that we don’t know how it’s gonna look with his future in the next game if he’s playing with us or not. It’s an elbow to the head and obviously, you don’t like to see that.”

Devils interim head coach Travis Green described the hit as “predatory.”

“Everyone who knows the game at all knows that the player is in a vulnerable spot,” Green said. “And there’s a player that is looking to… call it predatorial or whatever you want to call it. It’s definitely not the first time that it’s happened and it’s the second time against us.”
