The Toronto Maple Leafs have had an offseason of change with the loss of Zach Hyman, Joe Thornton and Frederic Andersen. Kyle Dubas, limited with cap space went out and signed players like Nick Ritchie and Ondrej Kase to fill in some of those holes.

They also offered Professional Tryouts (PTO) to forwards Nikita Gusev and Josh Ho-Sang. Late yesterday, they released them both.

Maple Leafs release Nikita Gusev and Josh Ho-Sang

Gusev, 29, was bought out by the NJ Devils and then signed by the Florida Panthers last season. The winger managed a total of 10 points in 21 games. Toronto was looking at Gusev for some bottom six depth but he never managed to generate much in camp.

Ho-Sang, 25, had a solid camp including a 3 assist game was also released from his PTO. The offensively gifted forward has had a hard time making an NHL lineup due to maturity issues, but John Tavares who also saw him with the Islanders sees a difference.

“His maturity level just seemed to [go up] another notch in all areas,” Tavares said. “The way he carries himself, his approach on the ice, the consistency he’s bringing & just simplifying his game a little bit.”

However, Ho-Sang’s approach has at least earned him an AHL contract with the Toronto Marlies and chance for a call-up in the future.

Alex Galchenyuk signs with Coyotes

The Arizona Coyotes signed forward Alex Galchenyuk to a one-year deal worth $750,000.

He’s just 27 years-old but has struggled to live up to being the third overall selection in the 2012. Last season, he scored 13 points in 34 games split between the Senators and Maple Leafs. Galchenyuk should provide the Notes with strong two-way play this season.
