The offseason is in full swing. Today we focus on the trade market. The first significant trade of the offseason was made, and it was quite the haul. Numerous teams can explore the trade market this summer. One team that could be busy is the Winnipeg Jets. For today’s latest rumours, the focus is a John Gibson trade.

John Gibson Could Seek Trade

Rumour: Frank Seravelli discusses likely candidates to be traded

A John Gibson trade could be on the horizon. Tough days lie ahead for the Anaheim Ducks. Ryan Getzlaf is retired, and Corey Perry has been on different teams for years. There is a new head coach in place. The core is young, but the fountain youth is plenty. It will grow younger as they have the second overall pick in this year’s draft. Gibson has been around long enough and has expressed his desire to change scenery. However, would anyone take a flyer on the veteran goaltender?

Why It Makes Sense To Trade Him

Anaheim is going to have some bad years for a little while. The growing pains will be there, but better days will come. However, keeping Gibson in the fold does not make much sense. Gibson is still a good enough goalie; just the team is poor in front of him. For perspective, Anaheim averaged 39.1 shots against per game (most in the league). It does not matter who is in the net. That is not sustainably successful hockey. Gibson has four years left on his contract with an AAV of $6.4 million.

Who Is A Potential Fit

You’ve got to imagine Gibson wants to play on a team that will contend and head in the right direction. A potential John Gibson trade destination as Servalli mentioned is the Pittsburgh Penguins. Tristan Jarry is a pending free agent. New general manager Kyle Dubas will help lead the charge on finding a new goaltender. Ironically, Pittsburgh is the hometown for Gibson. A reunion at home would be nice for the veteran goaltender. Other teams that need goaltending help could give Pat Verbeek a call as well.
