NHL Saturday bets: Keep the shots flowing

Last we chatted, we had ourselves a clean night in the Shots on Goal market while falling on our face in the Team Total department. That has us leaning toward focusing more on SOGs on this fine Saturday slate, though we have to include one team total look as well.

Cale Makar over 3.5 SOG (+100 FD)

Colorado is in a good spot to find room on the ice, as Ottawa allows 32.1 shots per game on the road and the Avs tally 33+ on average in Colorado. Factor in that the Avalanche just dropped an embarrassing loss to the Blackhawks, and my expectation is an explosive affair.

I like Makar to be involved. Ottawa has allowed the 10th-most shots per game to defensemen over the last 10 games, and Makar has been a steady offensive force lately. He's over in two straight games and seven of his past 10 at home, averaging 8.7 attempts per game over that span.

He's also enjoyed some big games against the Senators, twice going over five shots in three career meetings. He also has three goals against them, if you're into that sort of thing.

TJ Oshie over 2.5 SOG (+126 FD)

Oshie against the Flyers hopped on to our radars earlier this week when the two teams met and it's best we follow the trend.

The Caps winger has loved seeing Philly. He's scored a goal in four of his last five meetings, notching three or more shots in an equal 80% of games. By all means, consider his point prop or goal bet, as I like Washington to find the back of the net (more on that in a moment). I like the odds here on shots, as Oshie's shot volume has been increasing of late, averaging 5.4 attempts per game over his last five.

Matt Duchene over 2.5 SOG (+105 MGM)

Death, taxes, Matt Duchene hitting his shots at home. It's one of the most glaring splits in the league at the moment and another one of things worth following until it breaks our hearts.

Duchene has covered his shots in 76% of his home games this year on 5.1 attempts per game. On the road, those numbers dip to a 17% hit rate on 3.9 attempts.

It helps that Duchene and Nashville will host Buffalo today, a team allowing 34.6 shots per game on the road. Duchene has covered this shot number in three of his last four meetings with the Sabres, piling up nine SOG in the past two home games.

Carolina & Washington over 2.5 goals in regulation (-102 DK)

While I prefer to find us plus-money when parlaying something, I can live with the -102 price here for two teams that look great on paper and have consistent history against today's opponent.

The Hurricanes as a team have been shooting like crazy, at home they average 37 shots per game, aiding their 3.3 goals per game mark. I like that volume to continue against Pittsburgh, who are seeing 32.4 shots and 3.2 goals per game against them on the road. Carolina has scored 3+ goals in eight of their last 10 against the Penguins, including all three meetings this season.

As alluded to, I'm a fan of the Capitals today for goals. They've scored three or more in four straight games against the Flyers, and there's a power play edge awaiting us in this game that boosts my confidence in Washington scoring.

.5u: Jonathan Marchessault over 3.5 SOG (+118 FD)

I'm going right back to Jonathan Marchessault, though I will be making this a .5u wager as he was bumped up a number in what I consider to be a premature move by the books. Obviously, over 2.5 looks a whole lot better, and when FanDuel opens the alternate shot markets, that would make a wonderful parlay piece tonight.

I still like him to get four. Edmonton allows 32.9 shots per game on the road and Marchessault is only going to continue ramping up his involvement since his stint on the IR. Marchessault has 4+ shots in eight of his 13 home games and has hit this total in five of his last seven games against the Oilers.

Edmonton remains a good target for power play involvement given their penalty problems, and Marchessault paces the team in PP shooting.
