With AHL affiliate Wilkes-Barre/Scranton about to open its training camp and two preseason games — both with prospect-heavy rosters — in the books, the Pittsburgh Penguins on Monday made their first set of roster cuts.
There were no big surprises among the cuts, although the team also announced that defenseman Mark Pysyk has been moved to the injured list. No details about his ailment or prognosis was listed.
Six players are headed to WBS: forwards Matt Filipe, Dillon Hamaliuk, Sam Houde, Jagger Joshua and Evan Vierling, and goaltender Taylor Gauthier.
Three others have been sent to junior teams: defenseman Andre Anania to the Sudbury Wolves of the Ontario Hockey League, forward Matthew Soto to the Kingston Frontenacs of the OHL, and goaltender Michael Simpson to the Peterborough Petes of the OHL.
In addition, forward Peter Abbandonato has been released from his professional tryout agreement.
The Penguins play Tuesday at Detroit in their next preseason game.
