The fans at Mullett Arena went home happy on Monday afternoon as the Edmonton Oilers beat the Arizona Coyotes by a score of 6-3.
The 5,000-seat arena on the Arizona State University Campus appeared to feature roughly 5,000 Oilers fans in attendance and the roof looked like it was going to come off the place when the team pulled off a three-goal rally in two minutes in the third period.
The Coyotes carried a 3-2 lead into the thrid after a back-and-forth first couple of frames and the Oilers completely took over in the third. Evander Kane scored to tie the score and then Zach Hyman put the Oilers up by a score of 4-3 just 36 seconds later. Kane scored again a couple of minutes after to increase Edmonton’s lead and Warren Foegele added an empty-net insure goal later on to complete a 6-3 win.
For Arizona, that’s their 10th loss in a row dating all the way back to mid January. For the Oilers, they’re finally on a winning streak again after going loss-win-loss-win for a couple of weeks following the All-Star break.
Things worth mentioning…
It’s difficult to select a Player of the Game for this one because five different players scored goals and five players also had multi-point performances.
Leon Draisaitl opened the scoring for the Oilers with his 27th goal of the season and Mattias Janmark scored later in the first period for his first goal since all the way back on November 28 against the Vegas Golden Knights. After scoring those two goals in the first, the Oilers were completely silent in the second period and it looked like the Coyotes might snap their losing streak.
They finally woke up in the third period and completely turned the game around in roughly two minutes. Evander Kane scored twice, his 20th and 21st of the season, and Zach Hyman added his 33rd. The pairing of Evan Bouchard and Mattias Ekholm were key on two of the three goals and the third featured a great play from Ryan McLeod.
You could see the frustration boiling over for the Coyotes, who haven’t won a game in well over a month now. The Coyotes were firmly in the mix for a playoff spot in December but the team has cratered since the calendar flipped to 2024. The team is now more than 10 points out of a playoff spot and will likely be sellers at this year’s trade deadline.
The Oilers head home having won two of three games on their road ttrip through the Central Division. They’ll host the Boston Bruins on Wednesday and then they’ll play a back-to-back on Friday and Saturday, starting with a home game against the Minnesota Wild before a Hockey Night in Canada game on the road against the Calgary Flames.
