The Edmonton Oilers announced Monday that they have signed Sam Gagner to a professional tryout agreement (PTO).

Gagner spent the 2022-23 season with the Winnipeg Jets, where he tallied eight goals and six assists for 14 points in 48 games while averaging 12:10 of ice time.

This is Gagner’s third stint with the Oilers following appearances from 2007-08 through to 2013-14 and again in 2018-19 before being traded at the following year’s trade deadline.

Gagner was the Oilers’ No. 6 overall selection at the 2007 NHL Draft; through 542 games with the Oilers, he has tallied 111 goals and 206 assists for 317 points.

The 34-year-old has appeared in 1,015 games over 16 NHL seasons with the Jets, Oilers, Arizona Coyotes, Philadelphia Flyers, Columbus Blue Jackets, Vancouver Canucks and Detroit Red Wings, recording 192 goals and 327 assists for 519 points while averaging 15:46 of ice time per game.

During the 2011-12 campaign, Gagner etched his name in NHL history as is now tied for the second-most points scored in one NHL game when he tallied four goals and four assists against the Chicago Blackhawks.

Meanwhile, the Oilers stated that the club has also inked Brandon Sutter to a PTO. It was reported last week that Sutter would return to the NHL and sign a PTO with the Oilers.

Sutter last played in the NHL with Vancouver during the 2020-21 season, scoring nine goals and 12 points. He has been sidelined due to the struggles of his life with long-COVID.

Sutter made his NHL debut in 2008 with the Carolina Hurricanes and would spend four years there, scoring a career-high 21 goals and 40 points during the 2009-10 season. He’d then go on to play for the Pittsburgh Penguins from 2013-15 before ending up in Vancouver for a six-year run.

Sutter has appeared in 770 games over 13 NHL seasons, recording 152 goals and 137 assists for 289 points.
