Oliver Wahlstrom scored the shootout-winning goal and Brock Nelson collected one goal and one assist as the visiting New York Islanders snapped a seven-game losing skid with a 5-4 victory over the Calgary Flames on Saturday.

Hudson Fasching, Kyle Palmieri and Mathew Barzal also scored for the Islanders, who received a 35-save performance from goaltender Ilya Sorokin in the final game of their road trip.

Martin Pospisil, Blake Coleman, MacKenzie Weegar and Yegor Sharangovich replied for the Flames. Goalie Jacob Markstrom stopped 29 shots through overtime. Rookie winger Connor Zary and Nazem Kadri both collected two assists.

In the fourth round of the shootout with the opportunity to win the game, Wahlstrom ripped a high shot that found the net.

It's the first time this season the Islanders have won an extra-time game. The Flames have lost all three games in which they have gone past regulation.

Pospisil opened the scoring with his third goal in his seventh NHL game by zipping around a defender and converting from a sharp angle at 12:16 of the first period, but the Islanders responded in triplicate.

Fasching tied the game at 16:51 with his first of the season, a perfect shot from the high slot, and Palmieri gave the Islanders the lead 4:07 into the second period when he netted his fourth of the season by burying a rebound while on the power play.

Barzal extended the New York edge four minutes later when he quickly snapped a shot from the slot for his fourth goal of the season.

Then it was Calgary's turn in the back-and-forth affair. Coleman pulled the Flames within one by redirecting the pass from Nick DeSimone with 2:57 remaining in the second period for his fourth goal of the season, and Weegar tied the clash at 3:12 of the third period when his point shot was deflected by an Islanders defender.

Nelson replied 20 seconds later by being on the spot for a rebound to net his eighth goal of the campaign, but Sharangovich notched his third of the season with a deflection tally at 13:43 to force overtime.
