Ontario Hockey League suspends Canadiens first-round pick Logan Mailloux indefinitely

As ESPN explained, the Montreal Canadiens selected defenseman Logan Mailloux with the 31st overall pick in the 2021 NHL Draft even though the 18-year-old asked not to be chosen after he was fined by Swedish police for sharing a photo of himself and a woman engaging in a consensual sexual act. The woman did not consent to having the photo taken and ultimately went to the police, and Mailloux was punished for invasion of privacy and defamation.

It was learned Thursday that Mailloux will not be playing for the London Knights of the Ontario Hockey League anytime soon.

"Ontario Hockey League Commissioner David Branch today announced that London Knights player Logan Mailloux has been suspended indefinitely as a result of an incident that occurred November 2020 in Sweden, while the player was on loan to SK Lejon," the OHL said in an official release. "This violated the league’s expectation of the appropriate conduct of an OHL player.

"The player will have the opportunity to apply for reinstatement to the league on or after Jan. 1, 2022. A decision regarding reinstatement will be based in part on his conduct since his return to Canada and the appropriate treatment, counseling, mentoring and or education he receives from the date of this decision."

According to ESPN, Mailloux has said he's spoken with a therapist while back in North America. As Brendan Kelly noted for the Montreal Gazette, the fact the teenager is associated with the Canadiens remains quite a controversial subject among fans heading into the fall months.
