Ottawa Senators goalie Anton Forsberg Eric Bolte-USA TODAY Sports

Ottawa Senators goaltender Anton Forsberg will be out indefinitely after tearing the MCL in both knees at the same time during a play in Saturday’s loss to the Edmonton Oilers.

The Senators have had an up-and-down campaign in 2022-2023, but things seemed to be on the uptick after the 24-24-3 squad had won four-straight heading into their Saturday afternoon clash with the Oilers. Unfortunately, despite scoring three goals in the second period to tie the game, Edmonton ran away with it in the third with a trio of goals of their own. Yet the 6-3 loss was the least of the Senators’ problems on the night.

With six minutes left in the game, a scramble at the Ottawa Senators’ net led to a nightmarish scenario for goalie Anton Forsberg. As his left leg was pinned against the net to defend one side, Oilers player Zach Hyman was pushed in the back and ended up falling on the goalie’s right leg while trying to knock the puck loose.

It led to both of Forsberg’s legs bending in an awkward position and then having to turn over in pain after the puck was cleared. A video of the moment can be found above.

Senators goalie is likely done for the season with torn MCLs

After being attended to by the Ottawa Senators training staff, Anton Forberg was unable to be helped off and needed to be stretchered away from the ice. On Sunday morning, the team revealed he will be out indefinitely with a tear in the MCL of not one, but both of his knees.

The 30-year-old is more than likely done for the season. The only silver lining to the situation is that MCL tears are typically easier to recover from than ACL tears that sideline professional athletes for months following surgery. Nevertheless, this will severely hamper the Senators’ playoff hopes as they currently reside in the seventh spot of the NHL Eastern Conference.

The Senators return to the ice on Monday to face the Calgary Flames.
