The Philadelphia Flyers made headlines on Friday when they signed forward Owen Tippett to an eight-year contract extension with an AAV of $6.2 million.

The 24-year-old winger is in his third season with the Flyers and well on pace for the best of his professional career, scoring 18 goals and 12 assists for 30 points in 46 games. Last season, he scored 27 goals and 22 assists for 49 points.

On Friday’s episode of Daily Faceoff LIVE, Frank Seravalli and Tyler Yaremchuk discuss the extension and if the price is right.

Tyler Yaremchuk: Owen Tippett came over from the Florida Panthers in the Claude Giroux trade, and since coming to the Flyers, he’s scored at basically a 28-goal pace over an 82-game season. It makes sense that he and Philly signed this extension, but what do you make of the price?

Frank Seravalli: I actually really like it. I think there’s a lot of wiggle room for both sides on this. Consider where Tippett is at: he’s on track for a 32-goal season, and he had 27 last year. I think if you watched his game really closely, the two things that are really impressive are his speed and his power with the puck. He’s become someone that can really transport the puck up the ice, someone that’s good in tight areas.

He’s taken the opportunity that he’s gotten in Philly and pounced on it. He wasn’t getting minutes in the Panthers’ lineup, but now he has a coach in John Tortorella who believes in him. In terms of the NHL’s overall structure, 53 points and 32 goals will be in that $6 million range, and if you extrapolate that over the next eight years and what the salary cap might look like, even halfway through the deal it’s going to look good.
