Penguins beat Rangers in triple-overtime playoff marathon

The Pittsburgh Penguins won 4-3 in a triple overtime marathon against the New York Rangers in Game 1 of a first-round series.

The overtime winner came from Evgeni Malkin, who redirected a shot from John Marino into the back of the net.

Rangers goaltender Igor Shesterkin recorded 79 saves Tuesday night, the second most in NHL playoff history, but it was the Penguins' Louis Domingue who played the role of hero.

Domingue, a 30-year-old veteran who started just two regular season games this year, was called into action in the second overtime after Casey DeSmith left the game due to an apparent injury. Domingue recorded 17 saves in his more than 16 minutes on the ice and kept the Rangers from scoring a game-winner.

The game wasn't without controversy as late in the third period, the Rangers appeared to take a 4-3 lead with a goal from Filip Chytil. After a replay review, it was overturned after officials ruled Kaapo Kakko interfered with Penguins goalie Casey DeSmith, despite New York's argument that he was pushed from behind.

Game 2 in New York is scheduled for Thursday night at 7 p.m. ET.
