The Pittsburgh Penguins announced on Friday that goaltender Casey DeSmith underwent core muscle surgery and will be out for the remainder of the playoffs.

DeSmith started Game 1 of the Penguins’ first-round series against the New York Rangers but left partway through the second overtime period. Third-string goaltender Louis Domingue came into the game in relief of DeSmith and stopped 17 shots en route to a 4-3 win in triple overtime.

With DeSmith out for the playoffs and Tristan Jarry still going through a rehab process for a foot injury, the Penguins will roll with Domingue for the time being. The backup behind Domingue is now Alex D’Orio, a 23-year-old who hasn’t played a game at the NHL level.

Domingue started Game 2 for the Penguins on Thursday and stopped 35 of the 40 shots that the Rangers threw his way. New York won the game by a score of 5-2 and evened the series at 1-1.

Domingue spent most of his season with the Penguins’ AHL affiliate in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, where he posted a .924 save percentage over the course of 22 games. He stopped 79 of 83 shots in two regular-season games with the Penguins this season.
